AIR CONDITIONING DEADLINE GETTING CLOSE

Article Date: 20.07.2011

All air conditioning systems of over 12kW should, by law, have received an energy efficiency inspection by 4 January 2011.

However, according to the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) information it has received from the Department for Communities and Local Government "clearly indicates that the majority of such installations have not yet undergone the necessary inspection".

A CIBSE statement added that market for air conditioning inspections had been "less than originally predicted", but added that there was something of an upturn in demand as the legal deadline approaches.

M&E contractors are urged to relay this information to  their clients as from January 5 they will be in breach of the regulations created following the UK's implementation of the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. At the last count, fewer than ten per cent of systems had been inspected. Not only are building owners breaking the law, they are missing out on potential energy efficiency improvements that would be flagged up by the inspection.
