The Energy Efficiency Inspection of Air-Conditioned Systems

Article Date: 26.09.2007

The energy performance of building directive states, that an air-conditioned system that has a collective cooling capacity larger than 12kw must be inspected regularly by an accredited energy assessor.

The person who has control of the operation of the air-conditioning system has to ensure that the system is inspected at regular intervals not exceeding 5 years.

The energy assessors will produce a written inspection report and will give advice on how to improve the efficiency of the system. They will also advise the possible alternate systems or a total replacement of the system.

Regulation 23 requires the report to be given to the person who has operational control of the air-conditioning system who, must keep it and pass it on to new occupiers.

Systems first put into service on or after 1st January 2008 must be inspected within 5 years of the date of putting into service. In all other cases the first inspection of a system must take place;

•    In the case of systems with a collective cooling capacity of more than 250kw, by 4th January 2009
•    In the case of smaller systems, by 4th January 2011

Regulation 24 requires that if the new occupiers are not given this report by the previous occupier then, they must ensure that an inspection is carried out within three months of arrival.
