Evaporative Cooling or Air Conditioning?

Article Date: 01.10.2007

There are three typical methods that can be used to cool buildings: ventilation (free cooling); evaporative cooling or refrigerant-based air-conditioning systems. The choice of the system can have a dramatic effect on the total carbon emissions of the building due to their electrical demands.

Ventilation systems

Ventilation systems can provide free cooling for most of the year, but during the hot summer months of high temperature the system is unable to maintain internal temperatures below 25°C.

Refrigeration-based systems

Refrigeration-based systems are very effective at cooling areas. These systems are ideal for domestic properties and offices, but they can be expensive to operate.

Evaporative cooling systems

Evaporative cooling systems are ideal for large areas such as, warehouses. The systems can reduce temperatures dramatically to create a comfortable working environment. An evaporative cooling installation typically consumes less than 15% electrically compared with equivalent-rated refrigeration based cooling system. Evaporative cooling systems only works between April to October.
